Heart Cushions
A little bit of heart ...
Gerti is featured in the Australian Women's Weekly (NZ edition) issue for July 2012 ... We’re familiar with the Moon Cushions that Zonta so kindly makes for women experiencing surgery for breast cancer but now meet Gerti Weber (pictured), an Auckland woman wanting to make sure every woman diagnosed with breast cancer can receive a special Heart Cushion. Both are soft, supportive cushions which have a practical use to cushion the surgical area during healing and to support arms affected by lymphoedema but the difference is in the shape. One looks like the moon - and the other, like a heart. Gerti has started a charitable ‘heart cushion’ initiative here similar to projects in the USA and Germany. Local papers featured her and afterwards she was inundated with offers of materials and sewing from women in the community who want to help and let those diagnosed with breast cancer know that they are not alone, something that can make the journey a little easier for women post surgery. And Gerti certainly understands this, having seen friends and family experience breast cancer diagnoses. She hopes to encourage community sewing circles nationwide to make cushions for local women and distribute them through area support services. If you can help to make cushions in your area, please email Gerti at helpbreastcancer@xtra.co.nz for information and to obtain a moon or heart cushion, please contact us at Breast Cancer Support on 0800 273 222 (available in Auckland).
